Lavafleck Stoneware Clay (Potclays)
Code 1031 Lavafleck - popular due to its rustic flecked character. Good for throwing.
Recommended Firing Range 1200-1270C / Cone 6 to 9
Indicative texture 4-5 (Smooth 1-Coarse 10)
Total Contraction @ 1100c 9% / 1200C 12%* Shrinkage: 1100C = 9%; 1200C = 12%
Kiln shelves must be well coated with batt wash to prevent sticking during firing.
Please note that basalt is a naturally-occurring mineral. The user must sample/batch test in their own application before proceeding as we cannot accept any liability for fleck variation which is outside of our control.
Fleck size and density: Variable from batch to batch due to the characteristics of the raw material supplied to us.
Melt properties: Can be variable, sometimes causing raised flecks on the surface of the fired ware. Our tests show that a sufficient glaze layer will 'flux' these flecks causing them to flatten out. Unglazed areas can be wet-sanded after firing. This characteristic is not evident in our reduction-fired tests.
Microwave Use: Basalt is an iron-bearing compound which is not metallic, therefore fired ware can be used in a microwave.
